reFX confirms Rippler: Tilr's closed-source freeware synth goes commercial
Here’s a story the plugin world doesn’t produce often: an independent developer gives away an ambitious instrument, and a major company notices. reFX, the company behind NEXUS and VANGUARD, has confirmed Rippler as an upcoming synthesizer from developer Tiagolr, better known as Tilr. The official teaser currently labels it “Coming soon” and describes it only as “Physically Modeled + Subtractive.”
One correction to early coverage is essential: Rippler itself was not open-source. Tilr distributed it as freeware under a closed license that permitted free use in music production but prohibited modification, reverse engineering, repackaging and paid redistribution. The open-source project is RipplerX, the GPL-3.0 precursor that remains public and available for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Rippler was a separate, more ambitious instrument. Its former documentation describes a dual-layer architecture with mallet, noise and audio-input exciters; paired resonators with parallel or bidirectionally coupled serial routing; four LFOs and MPE; Scala and MTS-ESP tuning; and modular effect chains for both layers and the master channel. Those details describe Tilr’s freeware build, however, and should not yet be treated as the final specification of the reFX release.
Tilr had previously written that Rippler was designed as a commercial product before he decided to release it as freeware, while leaving open the possibility of an agreement with a plugin company. That agreement appears to have happened: the now-archived Rippler repository says the synth has been published with reFX and points visitors to the official product page.
reFX has not yet published a full feature list, price or release date. Claims about added wave-folding oscillators or extra filters may be interpretations of the teaser interface, but they are not confirmed specifications and should be treated as such. For now, the accurate summary is that reFX is preparing a commercial release of Tilr’s closed-source freeware Rippler project, while RipplerX remains free and open-source.
For a company best known for NEXUS and VANGUARD, a dedicated physical-modeling and subtractive instrument is a notable move into a different kind of synthesis. For followers of Tilr’s free plugins, it is also a rare example of independent freeware being picked up for a commercial release.
Producer’s note
With any exciter-plus-resonator synth, audition the exciter through a direct path before relying on the resonator. A transient that already has character tends to produce a more articulate result once the modeled body is added.
