PSP BBDelay: Vintage BBD character

PSP BBDelay is a delay plugin built around the character of classic Bucket Brigade Device (BBD) chips, those analog integrated circuits that defined the sound of vintage tape and analog delays. The plugin models BBD behavior, compander distortion, and circuit noise to add warmth, organic movement, and subtle degradation to repeats. It includes transient shaping, ducking, gating, saturation, modulation, and tone controls, letting you move from straightforward echo to textured ambience or experimental effects. Available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX for Windows and Mac.

BBD delays work because their limitations are musical. The chips naturally compress and color the signal, and each repeat decays slightly in both level and frequency. When using this kind of plugin, resist the urge to make repeats pristine. A touch of the modeled chip character and a small amount of flutter or wow (if available) will sound more natural than a clinical digital repeat. Use the saturation conservatively, early in the signal path if the plugin allows it, to add harmonic richness without obvious distortion. Keep your feedback time in sync with the track tempo for rhythmic delays, or detune it slightly from the tempo grid if you want the effect to feel more ambient and less locked-in.

Stack the ducking feature with gating to carve space in dense mixes. Ducking lets repeats drop back when the dry signal is present, and gating can suppress very quiet repeats, keeping the effect from becoming mud. This combination is especially useful on vocals or drums where a delay that knows when to stay quiet sounds more professional than one that trails endlessly.
