OceanSwift's DevOcean Modular fits 140 modules into a standalone app

Ocean Swift has released DevOcean Modular, a standalone modular synthesis environment that runs on its own C++ engine rather than inside a plug-in host. It ships with more than 140 modules and connects to a DAW through a separate VST3 or AU bridge, so the patching happens in the standalone app while the audio returns to a session.

The module set covers a wide span of synthesis. Oscillators include morphing and sample-driven wavetables, six-operator FM, additive sine banks, seven-saw supersaws, and physically modelled strings, alongside a set of effects for finishing sounds inside the same patch. The engine runs up to 96 kHz with 16 voices.

The part that separates it from a fixed module collection is scripting. DevOcean includes DSP and MIDI scripting, so if the 140 modules do not cover an idea, you can write your own module and drop it into a patch. That puts it closer to a build-your-own environment than a preset instrument.

DevOcean Modular is a standalone tool for Windows 10 and 11 and Apple Silicon Macs; Intel Macs are not supported. It is €129.99, reduced from €199, and includes lifetime free updates.

Producer’s note

A standalone modular that bridges into your DAW sidesteps the CPU problem a heavy patch creates, because the engine runs in its own process rather than stalling the mixer. Build the patch in the app, commit the audio through the bridge early, and treat the result like a hardware take instead of something you leave live and re-render on every play.
