Logic Pro 12.3 expands Beat Breaker and Alchemy

Logic Pro 12.3 for Mac and Logic Pro 3.3 for iPad share two main additions: more control inside Beat Breaker and an expanded granular engine in Alchemy.

Beat Breaker can now apply cutoff, resonance, and panning independently to each slice. A slice can be sent left or right, filtered with a high-pass or low-pass response, or given a resonant peak without affecting the rest of the pattern. Randomization can be applied to one mode or several, with separate probability and intensity settings.

This moves Beat Breaker beyond timing and repetition. Filtering individual slices can pull selected hits out of a loop without adding another sequenced filter, while per-slice panning makes it possible to spread percussion according to the rhythm rather than using continuous autopan.

Alchemy and Sample Alchemy gain Granular Sync and formant shifting. Granular Sync keeps grain generation tied to the project rhythm, making stretched material easier to use in a structured arrangement. Apple has also added a Granular Alchemy sound pack containing loops, one-shots, and field recordings processed with the new engine.

The iPad release additionally redesigns the Flex & Follow interface, adds copy and paste for Drum Machine Designer pads, and introduces a Repeat command in the Piano Roll. On Mac, Apple says hiding and unhiding tracks is now significantly faster, alongside fixes for automation, ARA, Audio Unit scanning, and export.

Producer’s note

Randomize one Beat Breaker mode at a time. If timing, filtering, resonance, and panning all change together, it becomes difficult to identify the part of the result worth keeping.
